Consol celebrates its second opening in Exeter

Sunbed specialists Consol, which operates 40 tanning studios across southern and central England, have opened a second branch in Exeter after securing premises through property consultants Alder King.

The new studio on 157 Sidwell Street is Consol’s largest in Devon and Cornwall and features 10 private cabins offering self-service tanning and treatments.  Consol’s first Exeter studio is based on Cowick Street and its success provided the compelling evidence that the city could support a second studio.

Lee Southan of Alder King’s Exeter office, which represented Consol, said: “Consol has demonstrated a demand for responsible and safe tanning and is looking to expand its network of studios across the UK.  Their latest branch on Sidwell Street provides excellent brand exposure and footfall in a strong secondary retail pitch.”

Consol’s self-service concept originated in Denmark over 20 years ago and has expanded rapidly since it was brought to the UK in 1996.  Each of the 40 Consol studios offers a range of world-class sunbeds, revolutionary tube technology and a range of carefully selected, high quality products to maximise the tanning process. Some studios also offer other self-service and automated treatments including the vibrating VibroSLIM weight loss machines and Collagen Light Treatment.

Each Consol shop is open seven days a week from early until late but most are only staffed part-time. Anyone can use the facilities but only customers who have become members by previously authorising their ID can access the facilities outside of staffing hours.

Caroline Tiernan-Locke, Marketing Manager for Consol said, “We believe this is somewhat of a breakthrough in the tanning and beauty world. With Consol, no appointment is necessary and therefore the services are available for those working unsociable hours and those looking to use our facilities without booking ahead.

“All of our equipment is modern, clean and safe with beds for both lying down and standing up,” she explained. “We have also reduced our sunbeds to the limit of 0.3% UV emissions, which is the equivalent of sunbathing in Mediterranean sun during midday and great for building a tan naturally and safely. This limit has been approved by the EU and complies with all British and European consumer safety regulations.”

Alder King’s Exeter office is looking to acquire additional sites for Consol in Plymouth, Newton Abbot, Torquay and Paignton.

Alder King acted for Consol who, after securing sui generis change of use, agreed a new 10 year lease.  Turner Locker represented the private landlord.
