Alder King expands Cardiff office with further key appointment

Following a major programme of expansion last year, independent property consultancy Alder King has made another key appointment in its Cardiff office, hiring Rhydian Sandbrook as a senior building surveyor.

Rhydian joins the Park Place-based practice after five years with GVA in Cardiff and London.

His appointment to Alder King’s building consultancy team coincides with a major increase in workload for the department, with significant and varied projects for clients in Cardiff and across South Wales.

These include the project management of the demolition and enabling works for the redevelopment of the former Cardiff Metropolitan University Howard Gardens Campus as a 671 bed student accommodation scheme on behalf of Fusion Students, dilapidations services on behalf of numerous local investors including The Charnwood Group and Templar Properties and, as a direct consequence of increased bank lending, development monitoring works for many of the major banks including HSBC, Julian Hodge Bank and the Bank of Ireland.

Rhydian joins partner Simon Lewis who was appointed last year to lead and develop the firm’s building consultancy team in Cardiff.

Simon said: “Rhydian will make a major contribution to the development of our building consultancy offer in Wales at a critical point in our expansion programme.

“He has great commercial awareness and brings with him valuable experience of working within building consultancy teams in both Cardiff and London.  He also has established client contacts in Cardiff and London and a track record of working with the Welsh Government, which will be extremely useful to us as approved consultants on its Panel.”

Rhydian, who originally comes from Pembrokeshire, said: “I’m delighted to join Alder King.  After qualifying and gaining early experience in London, I relocated to Cardiff in 2013 to return to my Welsh roots.  This new appointment consolidates this decision while also giving me excellent opportunities for career progression.”

Over the past 18 months, Alder King has made four senior appointments in its Cardiff office to further strengthen its service offering to Welsh businesses.

Partner James Nicholas was the first to join in January 2014 providing high level strategic advice across a wide range of disciplines including asset management, investment, agency and lease advisory, as well as business generation.

Valuation specialist Lee Lapham joined as partner in September 2014 to head up Alder King’s professional team.  He subsequently brought in his former JLL valuation colleague Helen James as an associate.

Building consultancy partner Simon Lewis then joined in October 2014 after 17 years with Cardiff-based Tuffin Ferraby Taylor.

Owen Young, partner and head of Alder King in Cardiff said: “We set out 18 months ago to invest in new high level talent to support the growth of our Cardiff office and I’m delighted with the calibre of the team we have built.  We are already seeing the benefits of this investment with exciting new instructions from clients on both sides of the water.”

Alder King’s Cardiff office provides multi-disciplinary property services to private and public sector clients including agency, investment and development consultancy, building consultancy services, planning and professional services including valuation and lease advisory.
