Bridgwater’s restored concrete castle and development plot for sale
A newly-restored Grade II* Listed concrete castle in Bridgwater with adjoining development plot is now on the market through Alder King.
Castle House on Queen Street in Bridgwater was originally built as a family home in 1851 to resemble a Tudor gatehouse. It is of major architectural and historical significance, being one of the earliest surviving examples of the use of prefabricated and reinforced concrete. It includes many ornamental and some structural uses of concrete including the staircase, handrails and window frames. The property was designated as Grade II* Listed in 1974.
The castle was partly destroyed by fire and had lain empty for many years but in 2002 the SAVE Trust purchased it following a campaign to save it from demolition. The property was featured on the BBC television series Restoration in 2004.
Funded by grants from Historic England and EDF Energy, the Trust commissioned an internal and external refurbishment to make the property structurally sound. The property also benefits from planning permission for the conversion of the existing building into three apartments. A small plot to the left of the property has been prepared for a proposed new build development and car parking.
