“There’s a positive culture in the business, with an emphasis on building a strong team spirit.”
“I joined Alder King as a graduate surveyor in summer 2002, following completion of my degree at Liverpool John Moores University. Initially employed in our retail agency team, I moved over to the professional services team in early 2005, primarily to get valuation and lease advisory experience ahead of completing my APC and becoming a member of the RICS in May 2005. I was promoted to senior surveyor in 2007 and then to associate in 2009. I was promoted to partner in 2016 and currently work in the lease advisory team, advising clients on rent reviews and lease renewals across the UK.
In 2018, I was appointed to the RICS panel of Independent Experts for business space and retail rent reviews in the South West. I also act as an expert witness in landlord and tenant disputes and valuation matters.
As a previous graduate, it’s now very rewarding to be able to mentor new graduates through my role as an APC Counsellor. We’re proud that we have a very high success rate with our graduates.
Above all, there’s a positive culture within the firm, with an emphasis on building a good team spirit. People are encouraged to achieve a good work-life balance, with lots of sports and social events and fundraising activities that people can get involved in.
My progression from graduate to partner has proved that at Alder King, opportunities are there to be grasped – and you’re given help to achieve your goals. There’s no dead end, no feeling that you’re being limited by the numbers of senior staff above you. Instead, the message is, prove yourself and you’ll get to where you want to go.
Above all, there’s a positive culture within the firm, with an emphasis on building a good team spirit. People are encouraged to achieve a good work-life balance, with lots of sports and social events and fundraising activities that people can get involved in. I’ve been on the social committee for our Bristol office for the last 10 years or so, organising Christmas parties and other social events. We also take part in campaign weeks like Business Green Week, Mental Health Awareness Week and Workplace Wellbeing Week, raising awareness of issues while also having some fun. There’s general agreement that the company sets great store by this.”
