Principal Designer

When the most recent updates to the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations came into effect in 2015, the CDM coordinator role was replaced by that of Principal Designer in an attempt to ensure that good design principles for safety are incorporated right from the earliest stages of a project.

Alder King has acted as Principal Designer on numerous building projects, helping to deliver new-build and refurbishment projects across the UK ranging in value from £1 – 50 million in a wide variety of sectors, from educational establishments and medical buildings through to large scale student accommodation developments.

These have included the 860 student bed scheme at Fitzwilliam Street in Sheffield, the landmark 26-storey Zenith student accommodation development in Cardiff, the redevelopment of part of the former naval dockyards at South Yard, Plymouth, working with Plymouth Argyle Football Club on its redevelopment of the historic Mayflower Stand, a new multi-use facility at Paignton Academy with KTA Architects and repair work to the Stonehenge visitor site.

Our Principal Designer consultancy service is led by chartered building surveyor and partner James Jacobs.  James has a wealth of technical knowledge and experience of schemes both large and small, working with clients, architects and contractors across the UK to ensure clients’ schemes are designed safely and, adopting the principles of prevention, attempting to minimise risk for both the construction phase and the future building’s use.

Our view is that it is imperative the Principal Designer role is integrated into the team, and that anybody performing the role should have design experience.  As a chartered surveyor, James’ background, combined with his experience of complex projects, allows us to deliver the role effectively, and with due regard to the design team, all the while ensuring that the role remains sympathetic to the clients’ objectives.
