Historic Country House on Edge of Bristol For Sale
Agency & Commercial Development
Leigh Court, Abbots Leigh has been brought to the market by Alder King property consultants, with the firm having previously acquired the property for the current owners 21 years ago.
Set within 22 acres of parkland and woodlands, Leigh Court is a Grade II* listed house on the edge of Bristol. The property provides a unique setting whilst only being c. 3.5 miles from the city centre.
Built in the Palladian style, this historic country home is constructed from Bath stone, with elegant Greek Revival interiors that reflect its rich heritage. The estate’s history extends over 200 years, with its origins tracing back to the Tudor era. The original Leigh Court, built in 1558 by Sir George Norton, was demolished in 1812 following its sale to Sir Philip John Miles. The Miles family retained ownership until 1915, when it was sold to Rev. Burden of Clevedon Hall and in 2004, Business West – the region’s Chamber of Commerce – acquired the property.
The main house provides approximately 26,157 sq ft of accommodation arranged over four floors.
Currently operating as a wedding, corporate, and events venue, Leigh Court has also served as a sought-after filming location for high profile productions including ITV’s Sanditon, Netflix’s Bridgerton, and BBC’s Doctor Who.
The property offers potential for a range of alternative uses, subject to planning and the necessary consents. Possible future uses include a hotel, a private residential home, apartments, or a retirement living scheme. Additionally, the 1.27 acre car park could present an opportunity for further new-build development to enhance the site’s offering, again subject to planning.
Leigh Court is being offered for sale freehold, with offers invited in excess of £5.5 million.
Simon Price, partner at Alder King and acting agent for the sale, commented: “Leigh Court offers a rare opportunity to acquire a property with significant historical and architectural value in a well-connected location. Its scale and flexibility make it an interesting prospect for a range of potential buyers.”
