Penzance wholesalers site sold to local business

Agency & Commercial Development

Acting on behalf of Penwithian Wholesalers, property consultants Alder King and Vickery Holman have sold the freehold of the former Penwithian Wholesalers site in Penzance.

The property, which fronts Jelbert Way in the Eastern Green area of Penzance, has been acquired by the Newquay-based storage and warehousing firm RT Julian & Sons Ltd.

The property includes two industrial/warehouse units totalling 21,449 sq ft and occupies a largely level site of 1.05 acres.  The purchaser plans to carry out some refurbishment works to the property.

Penwithian Wholesalers closed its doors in January after 83 years of trading.  First established in 1938 by Harry Dugdale who began selling bacon, eggs and cheese from a cart, the firm H Dugdale & Sons was formed in Causewayhead in Penzance.  The wholesale company began trading at Eastern Green in 1969.  Four generations of the Dugdale family have worked in the business since then, supplying local shops, hotels, restaurants, pubs and cafes with a comprehensive range of groceries, fruit and vegetables, wines, spirits and many other items.  Last year the family took the decision to close the business to enjoy retirement and explore other opportunities.

Alder King partner Ian Simpson says: “This site has been home to Penwithian Wholesalers for over 60 years and is very well known locally.  Offering it for sale represented a unique market opportunity and at a guide of £1.2 million it attracted strong interest, enabling us to secure a completed sale within 7 months.”

Alan Treloar, director at Vickery Holman added: “Freehold industrial/warehouse properties with access to major roads are highly sought after.  We were pleased to deliver such a successful outcome for the Dugdale family who have played such a prominent role in West Cornwall’s business community for many decades.”
