Alder King Planning Consultants, acting on behalf of Conrad Energy, have secured planning permission for a battery energy storage (BESS) facility on land at Rawmarsh Road in Rotherham.

The 40MW BESS facility will provide enough electricity to power approximately 60,000 homes for up to two hours, thereby supporting the Government’s national and regional energy storage policy.

Working with Rotherham Council and its statutory consultees, Alder King successfully negotiated the application to secure a positive outcome for a scheme that will help decarbonise the UK energy industry.

Mark Cullen of Alder King’s planning team said: “In granting permission, the officer’s assessment acknowledged that making efficient use of this site with a BESS facility in an established industrial area would not prejudice the sustainability of existing services operating in the vicinity.

“It will also indirectly provide support to the local grid network, thus increasing the viability of employment and residential-related development in the Rotherham Regeneration Area and the wider region.”

Phil Silk, Development Director at Conrad Energy, said “With this consent, we continue to develop our portfolio which means both consolidating our position as battery developers and strengthening our geographic reach. The Rotherham site is a great location for a battery facility and Conrad Energy is delighted to be helping it to fulfil its potential in offering energy resilience to local homes and businesses.”
