A fire that tore through a terrace of three historic Grade II Listed cob-constructed cottages in Wool, Dorset was so severe that only a small portion of the rear cob walls remained; the front and party walls either collapsed during the fire or were dismantled by the fire brigade for fear of injury.

James Jacobs, partner in Alder King’s Exeter building surveying team, was appointed as Building Consultant to oversee the fire reinstatement of all three properties, a challenging situation given their Grade II Listed status.

Our role included:

  • liaison with the Loss Adjusters and appointment of a structural engineer
  • liaison with the insured parties
  • debris clearance and temporary site fencing
  • preparation of measured survey plans, drawings and specification
  • obtaining statutory approvals including the preparation and submission of applications for planning approval and Listed Building ConsentFire Reinstatment Project At Wool
  • contractor tendering and management
  • preparation of Party Wall Notices
  • construction works supervision with regular liaison with the building owners, the Loss Adjusters and statutory bodies
  • handover of the premises back to the owners with monitoring of the defects period

We provided substantial support to all parties involved in the fire reinstatement, ensuring that the project was delivered on schedule and within budget.

As well as managing fire reinstatement projects, we also have wide experience of flood reinstatement, including the reinstatement of several properties following the 2004 floods at Boscastle, Cornwall.
