Landmark Truro building for sale

Residential Development

Old County Hall Truro

The Old County Hall building in Truro is for sale.  The Grade II listed landmark building is on the market for £3 million through property consultants Alder King.

The property includes the 30,951 sq ft main building, purpose-built for Cornwall County Council in 1890, with 0.925 acres of adjacent development land.

It already has planning and listed building consent for conversion into a 43-bedroom hotel, and the construction of a new building to provide 23 apart-hotel suites.  A further planning application is pending for converting the building into 34 residential units, with a new build development of 45 apartments.

Other potential uses include care, student and commercial use, subject to planning.

Ian Simpson, partner at Alder King in Truro, is handling the sale.  “This is a unique opportunity to acquire one of Truro’s most well-known heritage buildings and give it a new lease of life,” he said.

“With a neo-Georgian frontage and period features including an open stairwell with heavy ballusters, vaulted ceilings and parquet floors, as well as city and countryside views, the property has enormous potential for conversion and new development.”

Cornwall County Council occupied the building from 1890 to 1966 when it moved to New County Hall.  The building continued to be used by the Cornwall Record Office until its relocation to Kresen Kernow in 2019.
